Shared Hosting and Managed Server

Most hosters offer shared hosting, where multiple web shops share the space and resources of a server. The storage space provided for the shop system and content varies from half a gigabyte to several gigabytes. For web shops with small to medium assortment and not too many visitors this is enough. A top performance may not always be expected in shared hosting. But they are the cheapest solution.

More performance and storage is provided by a managed server (see also t3n no. 28). The hoster takes over the administration and maintenance of a dedicated server, so that the customer only needs to take care of the shop. A computer system that is exclusively available to the shop owner ensures professional performance. Unloved tasks such as Linux administration, shop software installation, maintenance or backups done the hoster. However, this service is also expensive (see “High-end package” in the table).

Managed vServer and cloud hosting

Often a bit cheaper Virtual Managed Server (Managed vServer): On a powerful computer (network) run multiple servers virtualized. When administering and operating the web space and shop system, there is usually no difference to the managed server.

There are still comparatively few cloud hosting services (see t3n no. 31) – but the trend can not be ignored. The advantage: With cloud hosting, several parameters can be continuously adapted to current requirements. Ideally, this scaling is done automatically. The customer only pays for the hosting service used per second or hour.

Not to be confused with cloud hosting are scalable managed servers such as maxcluster’s “Web Clusters” . The automatic or manual scaling of a managed server here ensures that a short-term rush of visitors can be bridged. Processor performance, work and hard disk space can be quickly adapted to current needs.

Shop package or 1-click installer

The service providers listed in the comparison table offer two types of shop hosting. Which variant is concerned can be found in the “Offers” column. For the finished packages, the customer selects a hosting configuration including the shop system of his choice. After activation of the order, he can immediately access the administration interface of the webshop – everything is pre-installed.

The situation is different with the variant “Hosting plus 1-Klick-Installer”, which offers especially hosters like1&1 * ,Host Europe * , Mittwald or Strato . The customer chooses an offer from the areas of shared hosting, managed vServer, managed server or cloud hosting, which includes a “one-click installer”: the shop software can be easily removed from the administration interface of the hosting service install out. An advantage of the 1-click variant is that several shops can be operated on a web space if it meets the technical requirements. It would also be conceivable, for example, to install an online shop system and a content management system in parallel.

The selection criteria

For which shop system the customer decides depends on prior knowledge and preferences, experience, technical requirements and other criteria. However , there are some fundamental aspects to choosing the hosting provider and the technology.

The backbone connection

The connection of the data center to the higher-level networks determines the speed of the hosted websites. For example, the new data center from 1 & 1 is connected to the main lines of the Internet at 40 Gbps. Lower values are not necessarily detrimental if the host customer’s customer base is smaller. However, there are also smaller providers without their own data center, which can prove disadvantageous.
