1. Decor at the expense of functionality

It will be a mistake to change the function you need, for example, replacing blackout curtains with translucent ones for the summer. What can be done without removing the desired function? For example, hang an extra pair of curtains and move them the way you need. But if you want, for example, to get up early in the summer, replacing dense curtains with light-permeable ones will be a godsend: sunlight will wake you up and cheer you up.

2. Going into an alien style

Sometimes, imagining a «summer» interior, I want to bring new impressions into it, for example, from a vacation in Africa. These can be products of local craftsmen like ancient artifacts, zebra skin, photographs of savannah, wild animals. Such accessories will not hurt a minimalistic interior, and classics, country, English style — very much. Don’t give in to the temptation to decorate your house with them! Or then change the whole interior.

It would also be strange to decorate the loft with curtains or wallpaper with «grandma’s» roses. But if you want flowers, there is a way out: choose fabrics or wallpaper with emphatically modern floral ornaments, harsh in style and in a neutral palette.

3. Decorative «tautologies»

Another thing is when a talented designer uses this technique: then the space looks fresh, shocking and at the same time … still not for everyone. In order not to be mistaken in this topic, let’s recall the rules of compatibility in clothing — they also apply to the interior.

5. Cheap plastic

Among the high interior brands there are those that produce tables, armchairs, lamps made of polycarbonate, and you can’t spoil the interior with such things.

6. Everything fashionable at once

If you want to modernize the interior somehow, you should not use the recipe «everything fashionable at once». It should not be used at all. Add a little bit. For example, we will add a fabric with zigzags to the floral theme, and we will hide the classic English cage until the autumn-winter season. We will add only one chair of the color of the year «periwinkle» (and then, assessing how it will be combined with what you already have). Etc.

7. Rough glamour

If you want romance, you definitely should not use feathers, rhinestones, varnished surfaces in the interior. It is not necessary to «polish» it with fuchsia color. The fashion for glamour of this kind was, fortunately, fleeting.

Now pastel shades, translucent natural fabrics — cotton, linen, silk, wool — are responsible for the theme of romance in the interior.

8. Disco colors

Lime color, even if it is relevant now, can lead to a headache if he is not given a strictly defined place in the room. It can be a carpet on an accent wall, sofa upholstery, a pair of sofa cushions or Roman curtains. The base color should be calm. And it’s better to use natural colors and combinations: nature will always tell you the measure.

9. The complexity of the decor

The same can be said about the complexity of the decor: complex ideas suitable for a restaurant or cafe are inappropriate in the apartment, even if they «hooked» you. This happened precisely because, after sitting in a restaurant for only an hour, you left, and now you remember a vivid picture.

For «long-term use» such a decor is not suitable. Imagine only in the apartment numerous flowerpots with fresh flowers descending from the ceiling, inverted trees, brightly painted carved doors and architraves, huge stucco panels and other fancy techniques.

And in general, the trend towards simplifying the decor — both shapes and colors — is now in the foreground.

10. Indistinctness of textures

Yes, now it is perceived as a mistake. The interior should be tactilely pleasant, varied in texture, and not only the interior of the autumn-winter season. Spring and summer, too. To do this, you can lay, for example, bed linen made of softened linen, put a silk carpet with a low pile, lay a jacquard linen tablecloth, hang a hand-woven tapestry on the wall.
