From the Soviet to a bright and extraordinary interior in the neoclassical spirit: the transformation of an apartment in Stalinka

Designer Anna Zueva turned the apartment inherited by a young couple into a stylish and spectacular space with its own character and history.

Area: 62 sq. m

The apartment is located in the center of Moscow, in a house built in the 50s. The hosts are a young couple of 30+ years old. They inherited the apartment. They knew exactly what they wanted, clearly understood the boundaries of the budget and fully trusted Anna Zueva as a professional in the design of the space.

Anna needed to create a stylish atmosphere and «shake up» the classical composition properly. Customers dreamed of bright and non—standard ideas, unusual color solutions, and also really wanted to preserve the library and some of the furniture inherited — they needed to be given a second life.

«Our views on the design and presentation of the future interior have completely coincided,» the author of the project notes. — We wanted to create a unique interior, designed to the smallest detail, which would clearly characterize the customers, was a kind of embodied «portrait» of a person in space. And, as it seems to me, we succeeded!»

The apartment had a typical layout of those times: a ten-meter kitchen, a long corridor, a small bathroom and two rooms. Developing the redevelopment project, the designer took into account the owners’ wish to add a touch of classical architecture of the past centuries. And, as a result, the new structure of the space reflects more the historical context of the area and the house itself.

Kitchen. On the walls — Farrow&Ball paint (No. 274, Ammonite), on the ceiling — Farrow&Ball (No. 264, Oxford Stone). Polyurethane molding, Orac Decor. On the floor — porcelain stoneware Equipe, on the apron — Kerama Marazzi tile. The kitchen is made to order according to the sketches of the author of the project.

The original, individual character of the interior is given by a rich color scheme. Anna chose mostly dark and noble tones, which, in her opinion, will not bother with time, unlike open bright shades and will not press. The hallway is painted in a muted dark blue shade. The bedroom is dominated by a similar tone: also dark blue, but closer to black. This tone gives a feeling of home warmth, and bright accents make the interior more complex and interesting.

«In a small room, dark blue creates a cocoon effect, besides, it does not hide the volume of the room, which, for example, bright shades cannot «boast» of,» Anna explains the idea. — For the living room, I settled on an eggplant shade that changes depending on the lighting, effectively combining with light gray cabinets and doors. The bathroom is built on a combination of a rich «forest» shade of the walls and terracotta details — this is a solid, calm, reliable and moderately bright solution with natural notes.»

Textiles play a key role. Upholstery and curtain fabrics are designed in a neutral color scheme so that they do not add additional «noise» to an already saturated interior.

Work on the project from sketch to implementation took 11 months. Of course, like many professionals last year, the pandemic prevented it. Due to the long quarantine period, the delivery time increased significantly. But since the customers fully trusted the author of the project and clearly formulated their wishes, this allowed Anna to speed up the process. The color of the walls was approved online during the isolation. The designers decided to make the kitchen and built-in furniture according to sketches in Russia (locally produced), which helped to meet the deadline.
